Text block 1

The part-Welsh artist David Jones, whose works are on display at y Gaer, Brecon from 1st July to 29th October, was also a highly-rated modernist poet. His poetry is strongly influenced by his experiences as a soldier in the First World War as well as his Christian faith and his knowledge of Welsh myth and landscape. Poets Hilary Davies and Chris Meredith will introduce and read a selected sequence of extracts of David Jones’ narrative war poem In Parenthesis (1937) and his collection The Sleeping Lord (1974). Jones’ war poem weaves the experiences of an infantryman with visions from history and Welsh legend. Talented young harpist Martha Powell will play seven classic Welsh pieces composed or arranged for the concert harp, each selected to reflect the mood of the poetry which it punctuates.Booking is advisable.
