Bishop

‘Bishop’ comes from the Greek word for ‘overseer’. So a bishop is a senior Christian minister authorised to have oversight for God’s people. As well as duties given to deacons and priests, bishops confirm and ordain.

Deacon

‘Deacon’ comes the Greek word for ‘servant’. Deacons in the Church in Wales have special roles within worship such as proclaiming the gospel. Traditionally, deacons have had responsibility for social care. Deacons often go on to be ordained priest.

Priest

‘Priest’ comes from the Greek word for ‘elder’. Priests in the Church in Wales are those authorised specifically to proclaim forgiveness of sins, preside at the Eucharist and bless God’s people, as well as other responsibilities.

Ordinations this weekend at Brecon Cathedral

This year’s ordinations will take place at Brecon Cathedral on Saturday, 25 June.

Please pray for our ordinands and deacons who are to be ordained deacon and priest respectively. Please pray also for Bishop John as presides over the ordinations for the first time.

To be ordained Deacon:

Benjamin Jones to serve in the Penderi Ministry Area (Stipendiary)

Richard Wootten to serve in the Brecon Ministry Area (Stipendiary)

To be ordained Priest:

Revd Sarah Harris to serve in the Central Swansea Ministry Area (Stipendiary)

Revd Anna Bessant to serve in the Brecon Ministry Area (Stipendiary)

Revd Carol Jones to serve in Irfon, Wye & Edw Ministry Area (NSM(L))

The service starts at 2pm. Please be seated by 1.45pm

Information for the Clergy in attendance.

Please robe in the Chapter House in the diocesan centre at 1.30pm to be ready to process by 1.45pm. Clergy should wear cassock and surplice with white stole or cassock alb with white stole.
