Plans to transform a Pontarddulais church into a thriving multi-use centre for the community have already been creating a "buzz".The St Michael's project - Calon y Bont - will see the transformation of the Pontarddulais church into a hub for community groups, with new kitchen, toilet and office facilities, and an improved worship space.Calon y Bont announced its intention to bid for funding for the project at an official launch attended by Bishop of Swansea and Brecon John Lomas, local politicians and representatives of schools and community groups. The Rev’d John Gillibrand, Vicar of Pontarddulais and Penllergaer in the Llwchwr Ministry Area, said: "We had an excellent turnout for the launch. There were 40 people there, including some key figures in the local community, all of whom expressed their enthusiastic support for the project."As well as a message of support from our local MP Tonia Antoniazzi and MS Rebecca Evans, the head of Pontarddulais Comprehensive School Gareth Rees and members of the school council were there n the day to show support. We had local members of the Police, all the clergy from our ministry area and local councillors. There was a very strong buzz at the meeting."John said the project is a sign of the Church's commitment to the wider community."We're saying to anyone engaged in health, education or social care that they're welcome to establish a partnership with us for the use of the new facilities."We're also open to members of the wider community who feel that this project is of benefit, come along and get involved."
