Exciting day at cathedral as licensing service sees a first for the diocese

Two new Lay Ministers have been licensed at a service led by Archbishop John at Brecon Cathedral.

Carol Jones was licensed as a Reader, continuing a long line of people who have undertaken this ministry from which so many churches have benefited. Carol will minister in the Irfon and Wye Ministry Area.

In a first for the diocese, Julian Stedman, from the Catwg Ministry Area, was licensed as an evangelist. This is a relatively new formal ministry in the Church in Wales but isĀ  important as the church seeks to share the good news of Jesus for all people in new and imaginative ways, as well as in more traditional ‘time tested’ ways.

Canon Ian Rees, the Bishop’s Officer for Calling & Discipleship said it was an exciting day for the diocese as we welcome two enthusiastic and gifted Lay Ministers.

“Readers have a specific and valuable ministry to teach and preach the gospel while evangelists are called primarily to look outside the church sharing a message that is hugely relevant in our society today, but a message that so many people are not hearing well enough,” he said.
