Politicians lend their support to St Gwynour’s community centre bid

Politicians have given their backing to plans to open up St Gwynour’s Church as a community centre for local people.

The plans have received more than 30 letters of support from leaders of the North Gower council and communities and this week Tonia Antoniazzi MP and Rebecca Evans AM visited the church and gave the project their backing.

The idea – Mission Gwynno – was born at a 2013 community outreach meeting at St Gwynour’s, in Llanernewydd, when it was agreed that the community should be consulted and involved in any ways the church could be used as a community centre, as well as place of worship.

Vicar Fr Tim Ardouin and Hilary Thomas, a resident of Llanyrnewydd, then went door-knocking at every house in the area to canvass opinion and support. This was repeated more recently with the help of congregation members.

An initial grant application to the Mission Fund was granted and it enabled members to employ an architect and project manager. The plans are complete now and planning permission has been applied for.

The community will be viewing the drawings and plans again this month at a Vintage Tea Party at the church, which takes place on Saturday, August 19 at 2.30pm.
