Rector’s niece Elin to perform St Mary’s opening summer recital

The first of St Mary’s, Swansea’s annual summer organ recitals series will be given by the niece of the rector, Canon Ian Rees.

Elin, who is organist at Bury Parish Church and a freelance accompanist and piano and organ soloist, will be performing on July 4.

Elin began performing at a very young age on the piano and the harp and began studying the organ at Llandaff Cathedral when she was just 12.

At 16, she gained a scholarship to Purcell School of Music and, after studying there for two years, she went on to the Royal Northern College of Music.

She is much in demand and, in addition to her church work, she works as a freelance accompanist at the Royal Northern College of Music and has performed at venues including St David’s Hall in Cardiff and Bridgewater Hall in Manchester.

She has, with the Bury Church Choir, played for a week of services at Canterbury Cathedral and will shortly be playing at Carlisle Cathedral, with Gloucester Cathedral already in the diary for 2018.

She enjoys giving recitals and venues have included Bangor and Bradford Cathedrals and frequently at St Ann’s Church in Central Manchester.

The recitals in St Mary’s will be held every Tuesday through the summer from 1.10pm-1.50pm with the last recital being on September 12.

Admission is free although people are welcome to contribute to a retiring collection.
