‘Bishop’ comes from the Greek word for ‘overseer’. So a bishop is a senior Christian minister authorised to have oversight for God’s people. As well as duties given to deacons and priests, bishops confirm and ordain.

‘Diocese’ refers to the geographical territory in which a bishop exercises oversight. The Church in Wales is divided into six dioceses each with its own cathedral in which is housed the cathedra (the bishop’s ‘chair’ or ‘throne’).

‘Priest’ comes from the Greek word for ‘elder’. Priests in the Church in Wales are those authorised specifically to proclaim forgiveness of sins, preside at the Eucharist and bless God’s people, as well as other responsibilities.

Ministry Area Leader for Central Swansea

The Diocese of Swansea and Brecon is seeking to appoint a Ministry Area Leader for the Central Swansea Ministry Area, Rector of St Mary’s, Swansea, with responsibility for St John’s, Hafod and St Nicholas, Townhill.

We believe that this post offers both an exciting opportunity and significant challenge. There is the potential for ministry and mission alongside excellent ordained and lay colleagues amongst a diverse range of communities in the ministry area.

We seek an experienced priest who is:

  • Able to marry civic duties with developing the community and mission of a city centre church
  • A collaborative worker who will enable the development of the ministry area, and all aspects of parish life
  • A pastoral priest, who will nurture congregations
  • Able to demonstrate a strong track record of encouraging discipleship in congregations
  • Someone who will support and trust the talents and ministries of others

The priest appointed will need to:

  • Lead the development of the ministry area collaboratively with other colleagues
  • Develop the already extensive witness and life of St Mary’s Church in the city
  • Lead and encourage mission initiatives across the ministry area
  • Maintain and build on the partnerships between the church and governmental, charitable, educational and artistic sectors
  • Maintain the particular daily ministry of St Mary’s Church as part of a lay and ordained team, offering pastoral support as needed

For an informal conversation you are welcome to contact the Archdeacon of Gower, the Venerable Jonathan Davies: archdeacon.gower@churchinwales.org.uk
