Archbishop joins Bosnian Grand Mufti for interfaith event

Archbishop John will share the stage with the Grand Mufti Emeritus of Bosnia at an event celebrating diversity tonight.

Archbishop John and Grand Mufti Emeritus Mustafa Cerić are the keynote speakers at an event focusing on peaceful coexistence to mark National Interfaith Week.

The interfaith dinner is an annual event organised by the Muslim Council of Wales. This year it is being held in partnership with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and the Knowledge Exchange Program. It will take place at Cardiff City Hall from 6pm and about 500 people are expected. Previous guest speakers include the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby and Britain’s most senior rabbi, Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis.

Archbishop John, who was enthroned last Saturday at Brecon Cathedral, said the event was an important way of encouraging shared conversations.

He said: “Conversation is a valuable and worthy means of breaking down barriers of misunderstanding between assorted groups and organisations, regardless of whether they are secular or religious. Around the table rather than across the divide is to be commended.

“This is especially so when differences between them are in danger of becoming dangerously exaggerated and standing in the way of shared humanitarian values and principles being expressed.

“I am delighted to have been invited to speak at this event and am very much looking forward hearing everyone else.”
