Children from Faith in Families’ Penplas centre have been given a tour of the charity’s £1m state-of-the-art Cwtch community hub ahead of its opening next month.
Cwtch – which includes play rooms, a youth centre and community café – is housed in St Teilo’s Church in Portmead, and will allow staff to reach out and support many more people.
The space has been donated by the Church in Wales for 99 years and more than £1m in funding has come from BIG Lottery People and Places, the Welsh government’s communities facilities programme, Garfield Western Foundation, Bernard Sunley Foundation and the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon.
St Teilo’s will provide a family centre, parent and toddler sessions, high scope play group, healthy family lunches, after-school clubs, holiday play schemes, adult courses and breakfast club.
It will also help people to learn new skills and develop friendships while having a great time together.
Faith in Families CEO Cherrie Bija said: “It was great to see the children’s faces as they had their first look at our new centre. It is a real community hub for everyone and, although it has been a lot of work getting here, today showed it has all been worth it.
“We’d like to thank all those who have helped to fund this amazing project, without them none of this would have been possible. Hurley Davies, our property consultants, have been a great partner and worked for us pro-bono at the start and the contractors, Interserve, have pulled a wonderful centre together. Everyone has been so committed to making this happen. Now this part is nearly finished and the exciting work starts as we bring everyone together to celebrate what we can all achieve and how we can be part of a real community”
The charity is also looking for people from all walks of life to get involved and help to bring the amazing community project to life.
Volunteers are needed to help with catering, admin, childcare, maintenance, fundraising and the garden and it’s a great opportunity to gain experience, make new friends and make a difference.
Cherrie said: “This is a wonderful new project in the heart of the community. We will provide some amazing opportunities for everyone to get involved and be part of, so come and share your skills and learn new ones, be part of a team that will make St Teilo’s Cwtch shine and the Penderry Ward be a great place to live, work and grow.”
