Moving Celebration

On Monday 13th June over 225 Year 6 children came to a special celebration day at Brecon Cathedral. The children came from the Church schools in the Diocese and they were accompanied by teachers and some parents. They were celebrating their time in Church primary schools prior to moving on to new schools next September.

The day began with a service in the Cathedral. This was led by the Very Revd. Paul Shackerley with musical accompaniment from Mr Stephen Power. During the service the Right Revd. John Davies gave a homily based on the parable of the Good Samaritan, which had been read by Revd. Helen Rees, the Diocesan Director of Education. During his homily Bishop John spoke of mercy and the need for the children to take all that they had learnt in their Church school with them as they go to secondary school. Bishop John then gave each child a prayer book signed by him to remember their time in a Church school.

The service was a joyous celebration with all the children singing loudly and enjoying themselves. After the service there was time for a packed lunch and then it was time for workshops. There were three workshops which included a Cathedral tour led by Revd. Steven Griffith, Dr Gill Todd and Dr. Ailsa Dunnleavers service 2016; a music workshop led by Canon Ian Davies, Mr John Humphreys and Mrs Christine Humphreys; and a craft workshop led by Mrs. Mairwen Large who was assisted by helpers including Revd. Chris Bowler. With so many children moving around Revd.Helen Rees was ably assisted by Revds. Geraint Wathan and Ian Drew-Jones.

It was a busy and happy day, providing a memorable experience for the children as they move on in their education.

The headteacher of Gladestry VC school, Mrs. Hilary Morris said that the children had really enjoyed their day at the Cathedral, and the headteacher of Priory VA school, Mr Sam Greasley described it as a ‘wonderful day … that highlighted the experience of being in a Church school.’

All in all it was a successful and memorable day !
